Next, you need to practice writing melodies. Understanding how to play basic chords will take you a third of the way to writing a great song. Learning to accompany yourself on an instrument is the first step. In one case reported by Pantvaidya ( 8), the aberrant right subclavian artery was transected during video assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy before being recognized and required an immediate vascular reconstruction via a median sternotomy. To our knowledge, this the fourth case in published literature describing the aberrant right subclavian artery in patients undergoing esophagectomy ( 5, 8, 9). This artery originates from the aortic arch (arrow head) and parallels to the esophagus. Thoracotomy has been converted and a retro-esophageal right subclavian artery (arrow) in a diameter of 1.5 cm is identified. At 3 months follow-up, there was no incidence of morbidity.įigure 2. This patient was discharged on day 8 after operation. Subsequent operative procedures were then safely performed, and this aberrant artery was kept intact. This artery originates from the aortic arch and parallels to the esophagus. We identified a retro-esophageal right subclavian artery in a diameter of 1.5 cm ( Figure 2), which was thought to be the azygos vein according to a pre-operative enhanced chest CT scan ( Figure 1). In order to investigate this aberrant vessel, the operation was converted to thoracotomy. During dissection of upper segment of thoracic esophagus, an aberrant pulsing vessel was encountered the level above aortic arch and in the space between spine and esophagus. After pre-operative preparation, a video-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy was performed through right thoracic approach under double luminal intro-tracheal incubation and general anesthesia. Biopsy was performed and pathological diagnosis of squamous carcinoma was confirmed. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed an intraluminal esophageal neoplasm 23 cm distal to his incisor ( Figure 1). We reported a case of aberrant artery encountered during video-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy.Ī 57-year-old male was presented to our department with progressive dysphagia for more than 3 months. However, an aberrant right subclavian artery may appear in this area and lead to disastrous complications. When performing video-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy, the area at the level above the aortic and in the space between the esophagus and the spine, is usually regarded as a safe area for dissection of upper segment of thoracic esophagus. Formation of abnormal retroesophageal subclavian artery is hypothesized to be the result of the persistence of the intersegmental artery caused by the abnormal involution of the fourth right aortic arch ( 7, 8). During normal embryo evolution, the proximal part of right subclavian artery develops from the right fourth primitive aortic arch and the distal from the seventh intersegmental artery ( 4- 6). The reported incidence of such an aberrant varies from less than 1% to 2% ( 1- 3). Am Very Sorry For His Family,Friends,& Fans,” wrote Cher, referring to their 1981 single “Dead Ringer For Love.” The pop star added, “Am I imagining It, or Are Amazing Ppl In The Arts Dying every other Day.” “Had So Much Fun With Meatloaf When We Did ‘Dead Ringer’. Read up ahead for everything know about Meat Loaf’s cause of death.īut before reports could pour in about Meat Loaf’s cause of death, many celebrities who worked with and knew him were already paying homage to the rock star on social media. Understandably, fans of the “Bat Out of Hell” singer have since wanted to know how Meat Loaf died. His longstanding career came to a tragic end when news broke of his sudden death in January 2022. The following year, the autobiography was adapted into a TV documentary movie on VH1, titled Meat Loaf: To Hell and Back. Two decades before his death, Meat Loaf also became a published author with the release of his book, To Hell and Back: An Autobiography On television, the musician starred on shows like Ghost Wars, Elementary, House, and Monk, along with a Rocky Horror Picture Show-themed episode of Glee in 2010. The rocker is also known for his film and television appearances throughout the years, the most notable of which include his role as Eddie in 1975’s Rocky Horror Picture Show and the character Robert “Bob” Paulson in 1999’s Fight Club. Meat Loaf’s Ex-Wife Was a Secretary at a Record Label-Look Back at His 2 Marriages If a fighter takes combat casting then he's blowing one of his last feats because he has them to throw away but if he takes rapid reload (repeating crossbow) just to take crossbow mastery later the he is being taxed and potentially losing a dead level of fighter (assuming we are sticking with that line of though). In this case, it wouldn't be "dumb" necessarily, it's more of an investment that is more expensive than usual and may or may not pay off, but regardless, it's not a broken feat or "circular logic." The first feat still definitely works for some people who are using normal crossbows. Is that "circular logic"? No, it's just a dumb fighter. Is there a rule that says feats have to not be useless for anybody who takes them? If a fighter takes combat casting (no prereq for class type), that's useless to him too. Quote: Difference is that there is still a benefit, the other is 100% useless. a "boar spear" doesn't get a ranged throw increment, even though a "spear" has one, for example. Note that a longspear is also not the same thing as a spear despite having "spear" in the name, and a crossbow is not the same thing as a bow despite having "bow" in it. This is from the perspective that a "repeating light crossbow" is not in general the same thing as a "light crossbow" unless specified somewhere. The reason the chambering would qualify is due to the phrase "in the same manner as you would a normal crossbow" <-thus since it is acting like a normal crossbow, the feat that applies to normal crossbows applies to the chambering (though uselessly so).īut the magazine has no such phrase granting it special inclusion, and otherwise, is not a feature of a weapon covered by the feat, so it isn't covered by the feat. Same deal.Quote: No, I am saying that because rechambering is part of the loading process, it would also be affected even though they aren't the same thing, granted it cant be reduced further than free action.ĭisagree, because it's not the same weapon that the feat says it applies to. Without casting defensively, ge provokes an attack for casting the spell, and assuming he doesn't get nailed and lose the spell for damage, the act of firing into melee provokes *again*. It's the same deal with a spellcaster casting a ranged touch spell in melee (think of this feat as the crossbow equivalent of casting defensively). Your feat lets you reload without the AoO, so you only face the one for taking the shot. If you are in combat with an opponent with Combat Reflexes, he would get an attack when you fired, *and* one when you reloaded. Does this imply that the action of reloading is what provokes (and not the action of firing in melee itself)? Table 8-2 on page 183 of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook states that an Attack(ranged) provokes an AoO. However according to the benefit paragraph you don't provoke when you reload your crossbow. Hummingbird wrote: Now, according to the description, you can fire in melee without provoking an AoO. PS: Crossbow Mastery is in the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting page 218 and CotCT Players Guide page 10 Can somebody please clarify this for me? Thx for any help. I've been reading the message boards with Crossbow Mastery for the past hour and kind find anything specific. Now, according to the description, you can fire in melee without provoking an AoO. A ranger may select Crossbow Mastery in place of Manyshot for his improved combat style at 6th level. Special: A fighter may select Crossbow Mastery as one of his fighter bonus feats. Reloading a crossbow for the type ofĬrossbow you chose when you took Rapid Reload no longer provokes attacks of opportunity. You can fire a crossbow as many times in a full attack action as you could attack if you were using a bow. Prerequisites: Dex 15, Point Blank Shot, Rapid Reload, Rapid Shot.īenefit: The time required for you to reload any type of crossbow is reduced to a free action, regardless of the type of crossbow used. You can load crossbows with blinding speed and even fire them in melee with little fear of reprisal. I have a question about the following feat: Whatever the case, the medieval past continues to fascinate filmmakers and audiences alike. And then there are those who use the historical setting to explore themes and concerns that remain as relevant today as they were over half a millennium ago. Some use the historical distance of the Middle Ages to deal with topics that were not open to discussion in their own societies. Some come from a propagandistic angle, evoking a nation’s heroic past as a means of fostering a spirit of nationalism. That exotic, even alien, quality is partly what draws filmmakers to the medieval period, but there are many other reasons why they might choose the age as a vehicle for their particular stories and thematic concerns. The epoch has always seemed remote, however, not only temporally speaking, but psychologically and spiritually. Universal Pictures “Oh no, we killed another one.The past may well be a foreign country, but in a world still plagued by political and ideological conflict, Holy Wars in the Middle East, and the threat of a worldwide disease pandemic, the Middle Ages is not so removed from our modern times as you might suppose. At the same time on the other side of the world, medical science is prospering.” There are no doctors, no hospitals, only traveling barbers with poor knowledge. The Physician isn’t just a movie starring Ben Kingsley and Stellan Skarsgård that a total of only five people saw, but it’s also an historical 11th century film that opens with the following prologue: “In the Dark Ages, the art of healing developed in the Roman era has been widely forgotten in Europe. 2 Medieval People Weren't Oblivious About Medicine By the end of the Middle Ages, going to a bathhouse was as common as it is for us to eat at restaurants (an activity that would only take off during the Renaissance era). The Middle East and Northern Africa also delighted in the use of public bathhouses. It wasn’t just Europeans who enjoyed splashing around in baths back then. Cleanliness was promoted as good health practice by the medical community, and some health manuals had entire sections on the importance of scrubbing your butt in the tub. While the wealthy Medieval folks had their big, lavish baths, there were plenty of public saunas and bathhouses for the rest, even the peasants. University of Manchester John Rylands University Library via The Guardian Translation: Something something probably yum. Like this cookbook, compiled by King Richard II’s cooks in the 14th century: This is simply not true, because there are many actual cookbooks and recipes still intact from that time. Also, if we believe what movies and TV shows portray, people in the Middle Ages only ever ate turkey legs. While most of Europe didn’t use forks until the 17th century - they were apparently considered “too Italian” - people did have spoons and knives and didn’t just eat everything with their bare hands. They were big on washing their hands before and after a meal - a custom many people choose to ignore today. These books taught children (and some adults) things like how to drink properly from a cup (wipe your lips after) and not to chew on bones “because that is what dogs do.” Proper etiquette included not loosening your belt at the table, and never picking your teeth at the table or passing any gas. Table manners (and just good manners in general), was such a big deal back then that it spawned its own genre of literature dubbed the courtesy books. They did, however, have cutlery and table manners, but looking at the movies and shows, you’d think those were only reserved for the rich and noble. We’re most certainly using these IPs, then, as they contribute to people’s ideas of a time when humans didn’t have fancy auto-flushing toilets yet. Martin’s knowledge of Medieval Times, and also they’ve stated as much. 4 Medieval People Didn’t Eat Like Barbarians (And They Had Some Real Fancy Cooks)īefore we dive in, a quick note: Yes, this article includes examples of The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones because, while both depict fantasy worlds, both stories are based on J.R.R. Let us then venture yet again into that time between the 5th and the 15th century, and debunk some beliefs audiences have about the people who came before us, all thanks to that darn Hollywood. We’ve looked at what Hollywood loves to ignore about Medieval warfare (knights were real freakin’ Chads), and we’ve done a full investigation of what life was like for a Medieval peasant (conclusion not great). We here at Cracked lowkey enjoy dunking on the common misconceptions of those times somewhere in the middle of the ages. A vector of all the negative elements of yĪ vector of all the positive elements of y. A vector of all the positive elements of y.Therefore, if we want to create a vector called y that contains all of the non-NA values from x, we can use y 0 will give us a vector of logical values the same length as y, with TRUEs corresponding to values of y that are greater than zero and FALSEs corresponding to values of y that are less than or equal to zero. Recall that ! gives us the negation of a logical expression, so !is.na(x) can be read as ‘is not NA’. x # NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA Recall that is.na(x) yields a vector of logical values the same length as x, with TRUEs corresponding to NA values in x and FALSEs corresponding to non-NA values in x. One common scenario when working with real-world data is that we want to extract all elements of a vector that are not NA (i.e., missing data). Let’s start by indexing with logical vectors. Index vectors come in four different flavors – logical vectors, vectors of positive integers, vectors of negative integers, and vectors of character strings – each of which we’ll cover in this lesson. The way you tell R that you want to select some particular elements (i.e., a ‘subset’) from a vector is by placing an ‘index vector’ in square brackets immediately following the name of the vector.įor a simple example, try x to view the first ten elements of x. I’ve created for you a vector called x that contains a random ordering of 20 numbers (from a standard normal distribution) and 20 NAs. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to handle each of these scenarios. In other words, we want to select some of the numbers in a vector based either on their position in the vector or the value that each number has.įor example, we may only be interested in the first 20 elements of a vector, or only the elements that are not NA, or only those that are positive or correspond to a specific variable of interest. In this lesson, we’ll see how to extract elements from a vector based on some conditions that we specify. Most of all, it requires three taps to be activated. It turns out though, this “simple system” wasn’t so simple to achieve but now, thanks to the help of my friend I think I’ve got something here that just works and does exactly what I need. So when I get home, I’ll find the link I shared on iOS ready in my browser. What I’m looking for, and what I’m sure others like me have dreaming of for a while, it’s a simple system that allows me to send with a few taps any webpage from the iPhone (on WiFi and 3G) to the Mac, and have a new browser tab open on the desktop. AirLink, however, requires you to visit a special webpage on your browser to retrieve the link you have shared. In my Twitter poll, many followers recommended AirLink, a web service that, once installed on the Mac and iOS, allows you to send an receive webpages remotely. But the other way around, iOS to Mac, is not just as easy to achieve. Apps like Handoff ( review) and Push The Page even work remotely with the iPhone on a 3G connection. Currently, there are several iPhone apps that allow you to get links from your Mac browser onto the iPhone or iPad: most of them either work with a bookmarklet or browser extensions that, with just one click, let you “push” webpages to iOS. When I try to open this edited file Pixelmator photo doesn’t see it as a raw file, only a jpg, when I undo the changes in the photos app, then Pixelmator see the raw file again.Yesterday, I asked on Twitter if there was an easy way to send a webpage from the iPhone to the Mac.

OK, so the solution is simple – downgrade.Īnd then make sure you tweak your Skype to stop it upgrading automatically. Skype has forced most people to upgrade to the latest version so this is not a problem for most people, however, if you are running the latest version (which is currently 6.4.59.833) you may have problems with anyone using a version earlier than 5.0. If you are talking to someone who is using a previous version of Skype earlier than version 4.2, and you have a later version, video calling will not work (as far as I can tell). As usual I turned to the internet for help, but in the end I managed to solve it myself with a few pointers to the reasons causing the problems. I really didn‘ t understand what was going wrong. So my problem was that, although I had previously tested my built-in Macbook camera was working (but not running in the background) and I could even see myself under the Audio/ Video tab in Skype Preferences, every time I pressed the video call button it tried it s best to switch to video and then reverted back to voice call. If you aren‘ t sure how to make a video call on the new Skype (version 6) please read the walk through on the Skype website here.
